A great game this week, with some flashes of really excellent play. The new gaffer will be very pleased with what he saw!
On another very firm and fast pitch, the ball bounced around a lot again and was difficult to control, but the boys applied themselves well. Ben was first on the scoresheet with a well struck looping effort. An unfortunate OG levelled things, but to be fair to Glebe, they were playing well too and had hit the woodwork at least once. Adam put in a massive shift in midfield when he came on, winning a free kick just inside the oppo’s half. Step forward Freddie, who only had eyes for goal and then struck beautifully into the top corner. Glebe unfortunately levelled things again though, despite another solid performance from Josh in goal, and we went into the break 2-2.
It took maybe five minutes for the half time Jaffa cakes to kick in, but when they did the boys were amazing. We had a spell where the ball was being moved around Barca style, a real delight to see, and resulting in really fantastic team goals for both Harry and Freddie. Harry had morphed into Alan Shearer by this point, with his first goal showing brilliant awareness in following up on a shot, and the second sweeping in a corner at close range, when so many of our corners often end up fruitless.
With one minute left and 5-3 up, we let our guard slip a little and gave Glebe two opportunities to shoot with space from fairly long range. Both were dispatched classily, as befitted a decent team with a couple of very strong players. It was a real lesson about playing right to the final whistle and the need to not defend so deeply that shots are permitted.
But it really was a great team performance – at times easily the best that the boys have played. The boys were given some great opportunities to develop their skills in a variety of positions, with Leo and Olly playing particularly well in both defence and attack. Both were unlucky not to score but importantly stopped the oppo at the other end. MOTM was Archie this week. He was relentless again, up and down the pitch, pressing the opposition and creating chances for himself and the team. Well done Archie...and well done team.
