Our game against Inter earlier this season ended with us being on the end of one of our heaviest defeats, going down 12-3 on a mud bath in the cold at Peckham. It was a bad day all 'round.
Roll forward 4 months and the change was remarkable. Against one of the best sides in our division and playing with the same line ups more or less, this shows what can be achieved with hard work, belief, organisation and......a fair bit of skill!
Playing with our new formation of two lines of three and a good team talk before kick off meant we were well prepared. Last week we deserved better than losing 2-0 but this week we got our reward, and in some style.
Jack added to his goal tally mid-way through the first half with a precise free kick which he earned by being brought down, nicely tucked away into the bottom left hand corner. We defended resolutely to keep things that way until half time. On the rare occasions when our back line was breached, Dominic was there to save all that came his way with hands and feet. Our defence (Daniel, Michael and Sam) were excellent, making tackles and throwing themselves into everything to keep us ahead. Ryan, Freddie and Jack were defending from the front but also posing a threat going forward. When Henry came on he slotted in seamlessly and immediately got into the game.
1-0 at half time and we knew that going up the slight slope in the second half might make things more difficult, but if anything our second half performance was better than our first. True, better finishing by Inter might have made things different, but that shouldn't detract from our determination and calmness on the ball. We were a threat throughout and we took our chances when they came.
Max came on for the second half and some lovely football down the left hand side starting with a pass from Freddie, then a jinking run and cross by Max ended with Ryan V smashing the ball into the net to give us a 2-0 lead. We knew a team of Inter's quality would come back at us, and they did, grabbing a goal, 2-1. There was still plenty of time left for it to go either way but we found an extra gear and Max got a third with a clever back-heel finish from Ryan's corner - favour returned. More jubilant celebrations from the boys.
Another goal by Inter made the last 5 minutes nerve jangling, but we stood firm to the final whistle with Ryan B having come on to give us fresh legs on the right. We got the win we thoroughly deserved, which was celebrated by parents, players and coaches alike! Their manager paid us a great compliment at the end, saying he had never seen so much commitment and will from a team. His own team talk at the end used us as an example of what a team can achieve with a collective determination and spirit.
Star Player - well everyone deserved it this week, but it goes to Ryan V. His performances are so consistent every week and his goal added to his work rate and craft on the right gets him the vote. Well done Ryan and well done to the mighty Forbes.
