An early kick off and a long trip to Peckham got the second half of our season underway.
The pitch was certainly a factor in our performance. We are very fortunate to have great pitches at OWFC but this was a different experience. Rain had made the Peckham Rye park pitches very muddy and we found it heavy going throughout. A noticeable slope was also always going to be a factor and so it proved. Anyway, enough excuses.
We were slow to get going and got punished by an early goal. At this level one outstanding player makes a real difference and that was the case here. It seems to be that way for many of our games as we are often well matched with most sides when that is not the case. We did manage to stay in the match though and exploit gaps in their defence. Once we got into the game and got ourselves organised we had more of the ball. We were still vulnerable to their quick breaks and conceded three more before half time but we also scored two of our own with Freddie making the most of the room available and finishing well not once but twice.
At 4-2 down we went into the second half with a chance but knowing that the slope was going to be against us. The pitch had also become very boggy making it hard work. The goals against us started to come thick and fast as we got tired and sometimes you just have to accept that it's not your day. We were not at our best and need to work on our tackling and strength.
We did have one particular bright moment in the second half when Max got his first goal for Forbes finishing well after after an excellent cross by Jack. That should do wonders for his confidence and earned him this week's Star Player. Well done Max!
Not having scored in our last three league games it was good to score 3 goals as the boys enjoy celebrating those moments even if losing.
The quicker we move on from this the better. The division reshuffle will help and we will be back to competing more strongly next time we play.
Our spirit remains in tact and the boys worked hard and kept at it. It's that spirit which makes days like this worth it!
