Let's start by explaining the headline!
At the start of the season, this was a game where we could have been on the end of a much bigger losing margin. To go down 3-0 to a side that had won most of their games this season convincingly, plus making an appearance in next week's Gold Plate final, meant that we knew it would be a tough game.
You try and analyse a game afterwards and work out what we could have done differently or better, but it always proves difficult with this team! Fact is, we are playing in tough division against good teams, but are competing in every game right to the end.
We went behind to an early goal (ok, that is something we have to work on) but in games at the start at the season that might have represented the sign of things to come. The team is much more resilient now and has real determination. Another sign of how far we've improved, is the longer faces when being substituted (or did I imagine it.....?!)
Throughout the game, our passing and movement was very good, and especially our tackling. Our tactical and positional play are also both much improved.
We are a smaller team than most, but have gained in physical strength and stamina. The extra training is making a difference and we are now finishing games as strongly, if not more strongly, than when we start them. We got into some good positions to score ourselves, but just lacked that cutting edge at times (ok, there's something else to work on).
2-0 down at half time and we were very much in it still. The second half was pretty even, and despite a huge effort, we conceded one more goal to finish up losing 3-0. Their manager said to me afterwards they knew they'd been in a game even though they have found it quite easy in the Suffolk division.
There were many good performances this week and some outstanding ones.
Dominic returned to GK duties and showed how far he's come. In the second half in particular he made a number of great saves with both hands and feet.
Daniel and Luke started at the back and were solid and organised. They don't like attackers to get on the wrong side of them!
Michael played at full back when he came on and looked as though he had played there every week.
Jack played the whole match and worked very hard in midfield, always assured and good control with the ball at his feet.
Henry, despite a lingering injury, was commanding in centre midfield.
Freddie was everywhere again, tremendous both on and off the ball.
Ryan V made plenty of trademark runs, beating players, taking the ball into the box and getting into good scoring positions.
Ryan B and Max played a half each up front. It's so pleasing to see their game develop and confidence grow. Both show nice touches with the ball and are getting more involved in games.
So, this week's star player was a very difficult one to choose with so many contenders. In the end, Freddie edged it with a true Captain's performance which had a real galvanising effect on the team. Shades of Beckham versus Greece in that 2002 World Cup qualifier!
Well done Freddie.
